Angoulême Comics Festival We Tell You Everything About The Audience Award France Télévisions
There have only ever been winners since the prize began giving out at the Angoulême Comic Book Festival. Chloé Wary won the France Télévisions Public Prize for Saison des roses (FLBLB edition) in 2020, the inaugural year of the award.
Léa Murawiec's Le Grand vide (Editions 2024) was published the previous year, followed in 2021 by Leonie Bischoff's Anas Nin, on the Sea of Lies (Editions Casterman). So you might be thinking to yourself, "Well, it's just natural for France Télévisions to favor women authors more than authors, than the public service patati et patata." But no, we don't favor anyone, neither women nor men, because the public is what ultimately makes the decision.
You'll learn how from us. In 2022, Léa Murawiec will be awarded the Fauve d'Angoulême Public Prize by France Televisions for "Le Grand vide.".
On November 28, a press conference was held to reveal the official selection of the Angoulême festival. (Antoine Guibert - for FIBD/9eArt) Where do the albums come from?. It was decided to choose 46 albums.
The goal of this selection is to showcase a year's worth of French- or foreign-language comic book production. We pick just eight titles from this lengthy list.
They work as journalists and comic book enthusiasts for France Télévision. We have eight members this year, including a few well-known individuals like Michel Field or Augustin Trapenard as well as less well-known but no less passionate individuals like myself.
On December 29, after reading all 46 titles in a month, we convened via videoconference. Eight albums have been chosen.
The eight albums up for grabs in the France Télévisions 2023 Public Prize competition at the Angoulême Comics Festival. There are no set standards by which the eight albums that are still in contention were chosen (France Télévisions).
We pay close attention to emerging writers, but not only because, in the case of The Last Queen by Jean-Marc Rochette, a seasoned illustrator from Transperceneige (1982) was also chosen. We take care not to group too many books from the same publisher together.
We also make an effort to maintain a balance between authors. At this time last year, there were three women for every five men.
Within a short period of time, five or six albums appeared in our common selections, and that trend has largely persisted year after year. Two albums were the focus of deliberative conversations.
We cast our votes when it blocks, and the majority prevails. The following titles have been chosen as a result: Ashes and Foam by Ludovic Debeurme, The Color of Things by Martin Panchaud, The Last Queen by Jean-Marc Rochette, Hoka Hey by Neyef, They Burn by Aniss el Hamouri, Merel by Clara Lodewick, Naphtaline of Sole Otero, and Roxane sells her panties of Maybelline Skvortzoff.
After these eight albums are chosen, the public will then have the opportunity to make a choice. There are nine comic book viewers in the "audience" (2).
We issued an invitation to apply on social media and through our branches, and it ended on December 28. This was done in order to choose and recruit the members of this jury. We sent them a questionnaire to learn more about their reading and comic preferences, and asked for a cover letter in return.
In this year's application period, we received about 300 submissions. We selected nine.
Multiple factors are used as selection criteria. All members come from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region for the sake of geographical proximity to the festival.
We strive to have the widest range of age groups, with nearly equal representation for men and women. On the other hand, we do not take into account the profession or the social origin of the candidates.
The nine members of the jury for the France Télévisions 2023 Public Prize for the Angoulême comic book festival. (France Télévisions) On Saturday, January 28, in Angoulême, the day before the festival's conclusion, the jury members will convene after receiving and reviewing the eight albums.
They will have lunch, deliberate and vote. We, France Télévisions, absolutely do not intervene in their discussions.
The result is their choice. It usually takes the jury a good three hours to decide.
Only one constraint: not to award the prize to an album already rewarded by the festival. at 7 p.m. on January 28th, a Saturday.
